Chennai to Kolkata Highway Food Guide: Best Stops on NH-16

NH-16 — the National Highway connecting Chennai to Kolkata — is one of India's great road trip routes. Stretching over 1,700 km through Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal, it passes through some of the most food-rich territory in the country.

But finding genuinely good food on a highway is harder than it sounds. Most highway dhabas serve rushed, mediocre food designed for quick turnover. This guide tells you where to stop for a real meal — and why Gudur, Andhra Pradesh is the most important food stop on the entire NH-16 route.

The NH-16 Route: What to Expect

NH-16 runs from Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in the south to Kolkata (West Bengal) in the north, passing through:

  • Tamil Nadu: Chennai → Tada → Nellore district border
  • Andhra Pradesh: Nellore → Gudur → Ongole → Vijayawada → Rajahmundry → Vizag → Srikakulam
  • Odisha: Berhampur → Bhubaneswar → Cuttack
  • West Bengal: Kharagpur → Kolkata

The Andhra Pradesh stretch — particularly the Nellore district section — is where the food gets genuinely exceptional. This is the heartland of Andhra cuisine: bold, spicy, and built on fresh ingredients.

Why Gudur is the Best Food Stop on NH-16

Gudur sits approximately 200 km north of Chennai and 130 km north of Tirupati — a natural midpoint for travellers on the southern section of NH-16. It is the first major Andhra Pradesh town after crossing from Tamil Nadu, and the food here is unmistakably, unapologetically Andhra.

Manvitha Mana Oori Ruchulu is the standout restaurant in Gudur. Here is why it is the best food stop on this stretch of NH-16:

It is Not a Dhaba

Manvitha is a 100-cover fine dining restaurant that happens to be on a highway. The kitchen uses ingredients from a 100-acre organic farm, masalas are ground fresh every morning, and the food is cooked to order. This is not highway dhaba food — it is the quality you would expect at a top restaurant in Hyderabad or Chennai, with the authenticity of a family kitchen in rural Andhra Pradesh.

The Food is Genuinely Exceptional

The dishes at Manvitha are the reason people stop here specifically — not just because it is convenient. Gongura Mutton made with farm-grown sorrel leaves. Pot Biryani cooked in clay pots sealed with dough. Natukodi Chicken from free-range birds raised on the farm. Vanjaram Fish Fry made with fresh Seer fish sourced daily.

It is Open Every Day, All Day

Manvitha is open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, every day of the year — including Sundays and public holidays. Whether you are passing through at breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there is always a full menu available.

Ample Parking

We have parking for cars, SUVs, and trucks. Long-haul drivers are as welcome as families on road trips.

What to Order at Manvitha

If You Are Stopping for Breakfast (7:00 AM – 10:30 AM)

Pesarattu with Allam Pachadi — crispy green moong dal crepes with sharp ginger chutney and upma. The quintessential Andhra breakfast. Light enough to eat before a long drive, satisfying enough to keep you going for hours.

Idli and Vada — soft steamed rice cakes and crispy lentil doughnuts with sambar and coconut chutney. A classic South Indian breakfast that travels well.

If You Are Stopping for Lunch or Dinner (11:00 AM – 11:00 PM)

Gongura Mutton with Rice — our signature dish. Order this first.

Pot Biryani — available from 12:00 PM. The clay pot is opened at the table — the aroma alone is worth stopping for.

Vanjaram Fish Fry — fresh Seer fish, spicy red masala, shallow-fried to perfection. The best fish fry on NH-16.

Andhra Thali — the complete Andhra meal on a banana leaf. Ideal if you want to try everything in one sitting.

Natukodi Chicken Curry — free-range country chicken in a rich, spicy gravy. Incomparably better than broiler.

Other Notable Food Stops on NH-16

While Manvitha in Gudur is the standout stop on the southern section of NH-16, here are other notable food zones on the route:

Nellore (45 km south of Gudur): Nellore is famous for its seafood — particularly Nellore Fish Curry, a fiery tamarind-based fish curry that is unlike anything else in Andhra cuisine. If you are passing through Nellore city, stop for the fish curry.

Vijayawada (200 km north of Gudur): Vijayawada is the food capital of Andhra Pradesh. The city is famous for its Pesarattu, Punugulu (fried rice flour balls), and the legendary Vijayawada Biryani. If you have time, stop at one of the old-school tiffin centres near the bus stand.

Vizag / Visakhapatnam (450 km north of Gudur): Vizag is a coastal city with excellent seafood. The prawn and crab dishes here are exceptional. Stop at the beach road restaurants for fresh seafood.

Bhubaneswar (Odisha): Once you cross into Odisha, the food changes dramatically. Odia cuisine is milder and more subtle than Andhra. Try Dalma (lentils cooked with vegetables) and Chhena Poda (baked cottage cheese dessert).

Tips for Highway Eating on NH-16

Eat where the trucks are parked. Long-haul truck drivers are the most reliable food critics on any highway. If a restaurant has a large truck parking area that is consistently full, the food is almost certainly good.

Avoid peak hours at popular stops. On weekends and public holidays, the best highway restaurants fill up between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Arrive before 12:30 PM or after 3:30 PM to avoid waiting.

Call ahead for biryani. Pot Biryani at Manvitha often sells out on weekends. Call 099082 52171 to confirm availability before you arrive.

Carry water. Andhra food is genuinely spicy. Have water ready, especially if you are not accustomed to the heat level.
